1.6 The use of learning technologies as a vehicle for learning delivery is a major issue for all universities. In the two previous institutions a number of pilots were carried out, with external research money supplementing substantial internal funding; the majority were real interventions that are still in use after due modification. The University has a national reputation for its innovative use of learning technologies. It has a well-functioning Teaching and Learning Technology Centre (TLTC) and its Learning Technology Research Institute (LTRI) has links with the LTSN Subject Centre for Information and Computer Sciences. Many academic staff have expertise in this area and wish to develop it further. Learning technologies are already employed to manage large classes and to accommodate the need for flexible study, which accompanies widening participation. Through the Learning and Teaching Strategy and related strategies, the University seeks to provide ongoing professional development here as in other areas, and to expand the infrastructure for Communication and Information Technology (C&IT) both for local delivery of teaching and learning, and for remote access or distance learning. Further investment in network upgrade and PCs for student and staff use is required and should pay dividends in terms of recruitment, additional resources for teaching, self-study and assessment, and improved retention.
